Top notch artistic talent
22 July 2016
The quality of a Catholic education is apparent in many ways, although not always to the naked eye. The annual VCE Season of Excellence awards, however, literally place artistic creativity in the centre of the frame and in 2016 Catholic school students were prominent once again.
In total 46 students representing 22 Catholic secondary colleges in the Archdiocese of 吃瓜不打烊 have been selected to exhibit their talents in the Season of Excellence fields of screen, dance, music, drama, theatre, art or design.
Works are selected from government, independent and Catholic schools as a sample of the most outstanding VCE students from the previous year, for the benefit of current VCE students and teachers. Each year the Season of Excellence acts as a benchmark for VCE assessment and curriculum by showcasing exemplary student work and associated education programs.
While the students are to be congratulated, so are their teachers and schools who work so hard to nurture and inspire this raw talent.
As an example, Elle Richards from Sacred Heart College in Geelong says she was continually motivated by her media teacher’s passion and became one of 12 short film makers selected from over 300 applications to be recognized.
“I was astounded to be selected for Top Designs. Media was always my favourite subject and making my Year 12 film was the highlight of my whole year. It not only means a lot to myself, but to my media teacher who worked hard, all the way back from Year 10, to teach me how to make great films and most importantly inspired me to love creating them! Being selected for Top Designs has encouraged me to pursue my passion for film making and aim for a career in the industry.”
Elisha Ciano from St Monica’s College in Epping made the Top Arts final with a pencil and charcoal series that, with her teacher’s guidance, creatively captures the character of her dad’s 1972 HQ GTS Monaro.
“I was intrigued by the reflections on the chrome bumper bar creating different shapes and patterns from the concrete, by the headlights and by the reflections in the car mirror and polished body.”
Many of the Season of Excellence exhibits can be viewed at different venues until mid-year.
