Green Team wins again
25 January 2016
At , Reservoir North, we believe it’s very important to encourage our students to lead active and healthy lifestyles. Through our participation in the Adidas School Fun Run in 2014 – a healthy alternative to the traditional chocolate fundraising drives – we were eligible to enter a program called ‘CUA Community Care’ that gave us the chance to win $5,000 for a school or community project of our choice.
This program was a community-focused initiative from CUA and our project proposal was to modify an area in the school in order to set up a school kitchen. We were very lucky to win $5,000. This money was used to purchase necessary appliances and utensils for the kitchen classroom for students and the school community to use.
In 2015 we were able to purchase a chicken coop, which is home to four laying hens, establish an edible garden and be part of the Stephanie Alexander Garden to Kitchen program.
The Green Team at the school is actively involved in many environmental projects and competitions throughout the year. This year we entered the Victorian Schools Garden Awards. Our entry was short movie showcasing the work of the Green Team.
On 26 November 2015, some of the older Green Team students went to the Victorian Schools Garden Awards presentation at the Royal Botanical Gardens to receive an award. We were very excited when they announced the St Joseph the Worker Primary school were the winners of the biggest prize. We won $4,500 worth of turf donated by Turf Victoria.
Winners of the Catholic Education 吃瓜不打烊 – Most engaging garden for teaching and play were:
- Bentleigh Secondary College
- Rosedale Primary School
- Athol Road Primary School
- Brunswick South West Primary School
