Learning options opening up

The children at in Park Orchards are making the most of science, technology, engineering and mathematics equipment bought this term – both in the class and at recess.
It is hoped the products will help engage the students in science, technology, engineering and maths by using robotics, Lego, magnet and electricity kits and products designed to introduce coding and augmented reality.
The school has student leaders in charge of running STEM challenges and activities at recess and lunchtime.
St Anne’s deputy principal, Katie Schroder said the equipment would prove useful to children across a variety of subjects.
‘We use STEM tools within our curriculum during maths lessons, our scientific and engineering inquiries and during our digital technology lesson,’ she said.
‘The purpose of teaching STEM is to make explicit links between the four curriculum areas and to highlight the skills of each area and how they can be used together to solve problems, and create new ideas.’
Mrs Schroder said St Anne’s applied for a grant through the Warrandyte Community Bank’s Community Investment Program last year to help buy the equipment.

‘We were extremely fortunate to secure $11,550 from the Warrandyte (Bendigo) Bank and $6,500 from our parents’ association towards the project,’ she said.
