Sewing for safety
10 August 2020
Year 12 VCAL students at , Tarneit, are making reusable masks as part of their Personal Development and Work Related Skills project this semester.
This project will develop employability skills in work-related contexts and provide opportunities to further develop skills that enable students to transfer easily between jobs. Students are excited to build on the college’s long-standing partnership with the local St Vincent de Paul group and give support to those within the community who are in need and struggling with the COVID-19 restrictions. Any monies raised will also be donated to this group.
The students have been supported by the Textiles staff at the college who have looked at prototypes for suitability and ease of construction and are providing the materials required. Textiles staff, led by Mrs Joanne Grujovski, have already sewn over 150 masks for staff at the college.
‘Student learning is always enhanced when it comes from current realities that provide a sense of purpose for why we do what we do. The proceeds going to charity speak to the values of the school and our students’, said principal Craig Holmes.
