Top Screen 2020Hugo Di Mattina from , Kew, has been named runner-up at the 2020 presentations.

Top Screen, part of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s , celebrates the achievements of VCE Media students. Hugo’s fantasy film Tamagotchi is the story of an animator struggling to keep up with the copious amount of work required of him. Collapsing at his desk and falling asleep, a dream sequence begins where his animation comes to life.

‘In making this film, I hoped to create a fantastical and satirical glimpse into the work life of a typical millennial, in this case, an animator’, said Hugo. ‘I wanted to elicit tension from the audience and call viewers to reflect on times they have rushed towards a deadline.’

This year’s Top Screen program represents only a small segment of the films created by VCE Media students in 2019. Students told stories that were honest, moving and entertaining, from skilful animations to commentary on the world as students see it today.

Of the 15 short films included in the Top Screen presentations, seven were from Victorian Catholic schools. Joining Hugo from 吃瓜不打烊’s Catholic schools were Siena Bonnici (, Box Hill), Kate Keenan (, Heidelberg), Angus Molden (, Toorak), Jeremy Njegac (, Essendon) and William Penfold (, Toorak). Joshua Wong from Lavalla Catholic College, Traralgon, was also part of the short list.
