History:

St Christopher's Primary School commenced in 1962 with a staff of two, and an enrolment of 112 pupils. The parish priest at the time, Fr Phelan, an avid Fitzroy supporter in Essendon territory, chose the school colours of maroon and blue.

The leadership of the school was in the hands of the Sisters of Charity for 25 years. In 1988 a new era began with the appointment of a lay principal. In 1992 the last Sister of Charity taught in the school – ending a 31 year association.

In 1993, a $1.5M building program commenced and was opened and blessed on 24 July 1994. This meant four new additional classrooms, an administration area and a library, as well as the refurbishment of eight classrooms.

Description:

St Christopher’s is a Catholic parish primary school serving the Catholic families of Airport West, Tullamarine and Keilor Park. Each year there are just over 100 students enrolled into 4 Prep classes. The total enrolment as of January 2014 is just under 700.

St Christopher's is proud of its contemporary learning environment, and seeks to be at the forefront of educational thinking and practice. The school's teaching is based upon the most up-to-date methodology and originates from sound research.

St Christopher’s offers a range of well-equipped specialist programs, including Music, Art, Physical Education, Drama and LOTE (Italian).

St Christopher’s has a clearly formulated Student Wellbeing Policy and procedures that caters for the needs of all. The School Counsellor / Psychologist supports children and families with these needs. The Student Management and Discipline Policies promote positive self-awareness.

Large, attractive classrooms that are both heated and cooled mark our physical environment. The gymnasium and dedicated music and art rooms are a welcome recent addition. A large oval with synthetic grass and athletics track, as well as asphalt and other outdoor play areas, provide the space for children to grow and enjoy themselves.

The school actively encourages engagement with the parents and wider community. The staff strongly believes that working in partnership is crucial in building a Learning Community. The enthusiastic and dedicated staff recognises the difference that can be made and is committed to maximising the potential of all students who attend St Christopher’s.
